Community organisations

Web design for community organisations.

Clubs, associations, RSLs, precinct groups and not-for-profits often run on volunteers and tight time. I build clear, welcoming websites that tell your story, explain how to get involved and are easy for non-technical people to keep up to date.

What it needs

What the site needs.

  • A clear “who we are and how to get involved” story
  • News and events that are easy to add
  • Member, volunteer or newsletter sign-ups
  • Donation or sponsorship information
  • Accessible, readable design
  • A handover so committees can keep it current

02

Designed for volunteers, not developers

The biggest risk for a community website is that it goes stale. A committee changes, the person who “did the website” moves on and the news page stops at 2022. I design with that in mind: a simple structure, a clear way to add news and events and a handover that shows exactly how to make changes.

Wix suits this well because updates are done in a visual editor, and permissions can be shared safely among a few people without handing over everything.

03

What most community sites need

A clear explanation of who you are and why you exist, how to join or get help, upcoming events, news, contact details and meeting times. Many also need a donation or sponsorship page, a newsletter sign-up and a members area.

I built the Torquay RSL website, a volunteer-run sub-branch on the Surf Coast, with a story-led home and about pages, a welfare services page for veterans and their families, a fundraising and sponsorship page and a contact page with meeting details. It’s a simple structure that volunteers can maintain.

04

Local precincts and councils’ community projects

I built the website for the traders of Union Road in Ascot Vale, with pages for food, drinks, services and shopping, a news and events blog, a newsletter sign-up and a trader portal. The same approach suits precinct associations, event microsites and community programs that sit alongside a council’s main website. A single small studio isn’t right for every council project, and I’ll be upfront about fit.

05

Accessibility and plain language

Community sites serve everyone, including older visitors and people using assistive tech. I build with readable text, strong contrast, clear headings, descriptive image text and keyboard-friendly navigation. I don’t certify formal accessibility compliance, so if your organisation requires a full audit, that’s separate work.

06

Getting the committee on the same page

The hardest part of a community website is usually people, not technology. Who approves changes? Who updates the events? Who answers the contact form? A short, written plan answers those questions before the site goes live.

I’ll help you set simple roles, show each person only what they need and make sure the contact form goes to an address that more than one person can see, so enquiries don’t get stuck when someone is away.

Want me to look at your website?

Send me your address and I’ll check speed, mobile and enquiries, then tell you what to fix first. Free, no obligation.

No obligation. No spam. Just honest advice.

Questions

Good to know.

Can volunteers update the website?

Yes. I design it so news, events and pages can be edited in Wix without technical skills, and I show your team how at handover.

Can you add a member sign-up or newsletter form?

Yes. Forms and sign-ups are part of what I build, and we can set them up to suit how your group runs.

Do you work with councils?

I’m a one-person studio, so I’m best suited to smaller community projects, precinct groups and microsites rather than large procurement-led council websites. Ask me and I’ll be honest about fit.

Do you work with community groups outside Melbourne?

Yes. I work across Australia, entirely online and by phone.

Ready to go a bit wild?
